This Week In Vaporwave History for Episode 5 was a double header featuring Laserdisc Visions (aka Vektroid) and Cat System Corp!
New Dreams Ltd by Laserdisc Visions came out on July 1st, 2011 on Beer On The Rug. Sunbleached (RIP) had a good write up about the album that included this nugget:
“The vast majority of New Dreams Ltd.‘s twenty-seven tracks are sampled from video game soundtracks – most notably Sonic the Hedgehog, a reference that remains popular in vaporwave music production to this day. The preponderance of video game samples causes New Dreams Ltd. to be occasionally referred as a part of the “segahaze” subgenre (almost as nebulously-defined as signalwave), which is often used in context with mostly-unedited short tracks whose source material is 16-bit video games.”
Our second release is Blue Dream by Cat System Corp, released June 14th, 2014! It was originally a split with Telepath but his side was deleted by the time it was reissued in 2016. Most times I hear people using these same samples as this album, they just don't stand up to this release. It's truly an epic meant for road trips, hazy midnight parties and even romantic adventures with someone you love. This album is a great example of minimalist production techniques, a topic that comes up often when talking about current popular subgenres like Barber Beats.
